Park and ride: Lost Shore Surf Resort has been acclaimed as the world’s best surf park – with good reason

Step into a Scottish stay with a difference this spring, at Lost Shore Surf Resort.

Europe’s largest wavepool, recently acclaimed as the world’s best surf park, is just minutes from Edinburgh city centre.

The £60m award-winning inland surf resort opened in November 2024, the result of a long-standing ambition by its Scottish founder, Andy Hadden, who first came up with the idea when working as an insolvency surveyor at property consultant Colliers International. The former quarry in Ratho has been transformed into a surfer’s paradise and adventure destination.

The surf is powered by state-of-the-art Wavegarden technology, bringing the thrill of the ocean a 10-minute drive from Edinburgh Airport. Just a year after opening the resort was named as the world’s best surf park by author and lifelong surfer Mike Goldys, writing in Blooloop, a visitor attractions industry title.

Lost Shore boasts luxury accommodation, from waterfront pods to hilltop lodges with stunning views.

Lost Shore is set within extensive grounds with access to woodland and canal-side walks, and boasts 53 luxury accommodation units, from waterfront pods alongside the shoreline to hilltop lodges with stunning views of the pool sleeping up to eight people, with dog-friendly options too.

Experienced surfers can choose from many wave settings.

Beginners can book lessons run by expertly-trained surf coaches, some of whom are Scottish champions. More experienced guests can choose from many different surf settings, from cruiser up to high performance and barrels.

But you don’t have to surf to enjoy this beautiful resort. Why not warm up in the onsite sauna, or take the time to unwind with a wellness treatment from Spa Studio?

Or you can enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner from Lost Kitchen, the waterfront café and restaurant which showcases  Scotland’s exciting food and drink scene.

Mooch around the country park or visit the Surf Shop, which stocks everything from wetsuits and leisure apparel to beautiful homeware, with a focus on independent and locally sourced suppliers.

There really is something for everyone, whether you’re a surfer or not. When you step into Lost Shore, you feel like you’re miles from the city. And when the sun shines and the water glistens, you’re transported to what feels a faraway place – without having to go very far at all.

There are options for solo travellers, groups of friends or families. Leave relaxed, full of energy and maybe even stoked with your new surf skills.
