Skills powering Scotland’s energy transition

Wednesday 09 September 2026

Half Day Conference

The Marcliffe

Aberdeen

Multiple pathways (offshore wind, grid upgrades, hydrogen and CCUS, nuclear new build and decommissioning, and the decarbonisation of buildings and industry) compete for overlapping technical and project delivery skills. Industry forecasts highlight large workforce growth requirements and material skills gaps. For example, the offshore wind sector is projected to exceed 100,000 jobs by 2030, necessitating the annual attraction and retention of large numbers of workers, while skills-gap analysis indicates significant shortfalls in key roles under future build-out scenarios.

This half-day event will focus on the practical business-policy interface that determines whether workforce demand can be met: how training capacity is planned and funded; how skills move between sectors (including from oil and gas into renewables, decommissioning, CCUS, and other growth areas); and what employers and public bodies can do to improve retention, mobility, and productivity.

The event is designed for employers and supply chain leaders, project developers, training providers and colleges, workforce bodies, trade unions and professional institutes, investors assessing delivery risk, and public sector stakeholders responsible for economic development and just transition outcomes.
