Taking stock of the renewables landscape

Leading law firm reflects on two years of changes and examines their impact on developers

Our annual Renewable Energy Seminar is set to take place this year on 6 November. Again, we will look forward to welcoming developers, operators, and all those (like ourselves) helping them achieve their goals.

This year we’ll be taking stock of where we are now, following this summer’s ‘Gate 2’ rush and examining what the landscape looks like now for developers.

This time last year we were anticipating reforms from the newly formed UK-wide energy body, the National Energy System Operator (NESO) on how energy projects (and everything else) connect to the electricity grid.

Our seminar was timed for the same week NESO made its first significant announcements that would eventually lead to the Gate 2 timetable. Post Gate 2 we will be examining where qualifying projects sit and what the route forward is for earlier stage projects.

We’re also two years on from the signing of the Scottish Onshore Wind Sector Deal between the Scottish Government and the onshore wind industry that committed to delivering 20 gigawatts of onshore wind by 2030.

We’ll be looking at the success of the Sector Deal and in real terms whether Scottish Government is now offering more support to the industry than in previous years. Where are we on those targets? What has the progress of the two years meant for developers? Has it (alongside NPF4) made a material difference to expectation in the consenting sphere?

In the last couple of years, we have enjoyed the support of our colleagues at Irwin Mitchell for the seminar and we were particularly delighted to have the firm’s head of planning and environment, Claire Petricca-Riding, as a speaker last year.

This year we will welcome our new colleagues from Davidson Chalmers Stewart after joining forces with the firm earlier this year. Its renewables team has a formidable reputation in the industry and a number of individual leading lights. We look forward to the networking part of the seminar to introduce our respective clients to the combined team.

For clients that means increased capacity across the team but also more expertise in particular areas including crofting and corporate support. Most importantly we share a culture with the Davidson Chalmers Stewart team that keeps client service and commercially focused advice at the centre of everything we do.

We’re excited to offer an engaging and informative seminar that addresses key questions for developers at this time and provides some of the very best industry networking of the year.

WJM’s Renewable Energy Seminar is on 6 November 2025 between 1.30pm and 8pm at the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow. Spaces can be booked via events@wjm.co.uk
